It’s all about purpose. The puppy wasn’t fulfilling his sole purpose to hunt, so he was worthless to his owners. Better to kill the little guy than to find another purpose for him.
This aberrant mindset carries over to people as well. If you’re not a Christian you’re not pleasing God, and that must be corrected. If you don’t obey the directives planted in the Bible, you’re a sinner and a disgrace to God Almighty.
If you’re female, you have three purposes:
Get married
Birth many children
Be subservient to your husband and
God
To the Christofascist community, you will not have everlasting life unless you follow the recipe exactly. And their mission is to force the dissident mentality into obeisance. They view the trump presidency (and Project 2025) as their guide to preparing everyone for the return of Jesus Christ.
It is their entire purpose. Cruelty is fine if it produces the result they demand.
This animal cruelty issue fits perfectly with the Christian Nationalist pillars of "Freedom, Order, and Violence" as described in the book "The Flag and the Cross." Noem is showing that she is willing to rule with an iron fist and willing to kill in furtherance of what she considers to be order. Sharing such anecdotes is a message. It was her version of killing a chicken to scare the monkeys.
In regard to your comment about leaving on the side of the road, that is not more kind. Nearly all dogs that get dumped either get hit by a car thinking their owner is coming back to get them or they starve to death. Dogs are highly domesticated and don't just start surviving in the wild when they get dumped. People thinking dumping in the country is the right things to do but that is much worse. At least in a city, there is a much larger chance that someone will grab them or they can find people to give them food (dogs are wild anymore, they need us to survive in most cases) Unless someone gets them quickly or they are a breed that is built for the wild (and that dog has some instincts), that dog is going to die a much more painful death.
She should have found a trainer to take the dog so they could train and sell to another hunter or if they were going to fail training, find another home. That would have taken a few phone calls. A trainer with space to take a dog in would jump at a free purebred hunting dog they can train and sell.
Absolutely correct! Dumping is a far worse fate than being shot. Not that there is any redeeming qualities about Noem’s actions. I’ve lived in a rural area where people dumped (live), unwanted pets frequently and saw firsthand how astoundingly cruel that was. It should never even be considered as an option.
Thank you for your thoughts on this. I guess I assumed it was better that her dog have a *chance* of survival than no chance because she killed it with her own hands. I live in the country too and have rescued my fair share of animals (my husband calls me a Disney Princess bc animals in distress just seem to find me). I guess I assumed everyone was like that.
Project 2025 is going after the chronically ill and disabled as well. Eugenics and ableism are still alive in 2024.
That's terrifying

You are welcome - thanks for thinking about it.
